Professional Profiles

Below are brief outlines of our “In-house” scientists specialities and qualifications.

All of our scientists were Registered Forensic Practitioners for there specialist fields prior to the demise of the Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners.

We also have a number of external consultants who work on our behalf, in a wide range of evidential specialities. For more information of their qualifications/experience, please contact us directly and we will be happy to provide their extensive CVs.


David John Hayward, BSc MSc CBiol MSB

Mr Hayward holds the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Biology with Honours  from the University of Nottingham and Master of Science in Forensic Science from King’s College London.  The latter degree was received in part for Research and Development work undertaken in the DNA Department of the Forensic Science Agency of Northern Ireland. He is also a Chartered Biologist, a Member of the Society of Biology and a Member of the Forensic Science Society. He is a graduate of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Bloodstain Pattern Recognition course held at Carleton University, Ontario, Canada and the Metropolitan Police Institute “Advanced Bloodstain Pattern Analysis Workshop”, Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA.  He is a regularly attends DNA related conferences and workshops.

He has been involved in casework since 1999 and has experience in a number areas of forensic science including; the examination of items for biological evidence such as blood and seminal staining, the experimental application of DNA profiling techniques, the interpretation of DNA profiling results and calculations in alcohol related matters. He has given expert evidence in trials at both Crown and Magistrates’ Courts.


Emma Youngson (nee Lynch), BSc MSc

Mrs Youngson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry with Honours from the University of St Andrews and also a Master of Science degree in Forensic Science from the University of Strathclyde. She has attended basic and advanced Blood Stain Pattern Analysis Courses held in the United States of America and is a member of the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts.

Mrs Youngson has experience in a number of areas of forensic science including the interpretation of DNA profiling results, alcohol related matters and the examination of items for the presence of biological evidence such as blood, semen and saliva. Mrs Youngson has given expert evidence in both Crown and Magistrates Courts.


Frank Gore, BSc

Mr Gore holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physiology and Zoology with Honours from the University of Sheffield. He was employed by the Forensic Science Service between 1969 and 2004.

He has experience in a number of areas of forensic science, including the examination of items for the presence of biological evidence such as blood, semen and saliva, the interpretation of DNA profiling results and the examination of fibres and hairs.

Mr Gore is of proven ability in the Courts at all levels.


Gerry Metcalfe, BA BSc CBiol MSB

Mr Metcalfe holds First Class Honours Degrees of Bachelor of Arts (Biology and Chemistry) and Bachelor of Science (Psychology).  He is a Chartered Biologist and a Member of the Society of Biology.

He joined the Home Office Forensic Science Service in 1983. Nearly all of his work since then has been as a questioned documents examiner and he has compared handwriting and signatures on tens of thousands of documents. In addition he has carried out examinations involving ink, papers, modern office technology (printers, photocopiers, typescripts, stamps, etc.) chronological sequencing and indented impressions.

He took early retirement from the Forensic Science Service in 2004 and entered private practice with Hayward Associates as a consultant forensic questioned documents examiner. He has attended Crown and other courts to give evidence in this capacity on hundreds of occasions.


Julie Lomas, BSc CBiol MSB

Mrs Lomas holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Biology and Pharmacology with honours from Nottingham Trent University.  She is a Chartered Biologist, a Member of the Society of Biology and an Authorised Analyst within the provisions of Section 16 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act, 1988.

She has been a forensic scientist since 1977 and her expertise extends to a wide range of evidential types including; the analysis of alcohol and calculations in alcohol related matters, working as an analytical toxicologist, the examination and analysis of illicit drugs, the examination, testing and comparison of items associated with the use, supply and production of illicit drugs including the cultivation of cannabis.

She has given expert evidence in trials at both Crown and Magistrates Courts and also during inquests at Coroners Courts.
